The American Library Association (ALA) is a nonprofit organization based in the United States that promotes libraries and library education internationally. It is the oldest and largest library association in the world with more than 57,000 members.

ALA-Accredited programs can be found at schools in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada. These programs offer degrees with names such as Master of Library Science (MLS), Master of Arts, Master of Librarianship, Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS), and Master of Science. To be accredited, the program must undergo an external review and meet the Standards for Accreditation of Masters Programs in Library and Information Studies. The ALA website provides a directory in database form of ALA-Accredited programs. There are currently 59 accredited programs and two that are candidates seeking accreditation.
